Now take this as you like: In his recent book, "Rock Roadie," Hendrix's former assistant James "Tappy" Wright claims Hendrix was murdered by his then manager Michael Jeffrey. According to Wright's account, Jeffrey allegedly confessed to Wright that he had murder Hendrix to collect on Hendrix's life insurance policy. At the time, Jeffrey had been written as the beneficiary of Hendrix's $2 million life insurance policy, and according to Wright's alleged conversation with Jeffrey from 1971, Jeffrey was worried Hendrix was going to fire him. Jeffrey, who died in 1973 in a plane crash, is quoted by Wright as saying: "I was in London the night of Jimi's death and together with some old friends... we went round to Monika's [Dannemann] hotel room, got a handful of pills and stuffed them into his mouth...then poured a few bottles of red wine deep into his windpipe...I had to do it. Jimi was worth much more to me dead than alive...That son of a bitch was going to leave me. If I lost him, I'd lose everything." The coroner's report stated that Hendrix died of "barbiturate intoxication and inhalation of vomit."
